Our second day in Rome was mostly going to be taken up by Vatican City, however our tour wasn’t booked until later in the morning. We decided to spend our time before the tour at Castel Sant’Angelo.
Initially commissioned by Roman Emperor Hadrian as a mausoleum for his family, it was later used by the popes as a fortress and castle, and is now a museum. It was absolutely my favourite place in Rome. We got there right when it opened, and it was mostly empty the entire time we were there, which was wonderful. It has great views of the city, and lovely little cafe, and was just what my mom and I needed after being on the crowded city streets yesterday.
And then we went to the most crowded place – Vatican City. I highly recommend pre-booking a tour if you’re going to go, as you can at least skip the lines in the beginning.
To finish our day, we hopped on another hop on hop off bus for a tour of the city. We’ve made sure to do a bus tour wherever possible, as they are one of my mom’s favourite ways to view the sites.
